The Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) offers the only payroll certifications in Canada, and you can earn one or all CPA certificates right here at Sheridan. Our programs will prepare you to manage a company’s compliance requirements, deliver clear and reliable payroll information and contribute valuable insights to an organization’s payroll policy and strategy. CPA certification includes: The Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) and The Certified Payroll Manager (CPM).

The CPA’s PCP certification is the foundation for a career in payroll.  Gain an in-depth understanding of the legislative requirements to keep your organization compliant throughout the annual payroll cycle. When you get certified, you join a growing community of supportive professionals and gain access to the resources you need to stay current and compliant.

PCP certification requires three core courses, one transfer of credit and one year of weighted, related work experience. Please see the requirements in completion order listed below.

  1. Payroll Compliance Legislation (PCL)
  2. Payroll Fundamentals 1 (PF1)
  3. Payroll Fundamentals 2 (PF2)
  4. Introduction to Accounting (transfer of credit; offered at post-secondary institutions)
  5. PCP Work Experience Requirement Application (WERA) (a minimum of one year work experience in payroll)

All courses, including Introduction to Accounting, require a passing grade of 65% in order to be accepted toward PCP certification.

Payroll Experience Prerequisite Application: Effective January 2015, if you want to enroll in the PCP program, you must meet a payroll experience prerequisite. Requirements are as follows: at least one year of weighted payroll experience obtained within five years before or five years after the start of the Payroll Compliance Legislation Course. Note Laptop Requirement - Payroll Compliance Practitioner Courses:
Sheridan now requires students to bring a laptop or netbook computer for the mid-term and final exams for some courses in the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Program. The computer should be able to connect to the internet either through WiFi or an ethernet connection (wired). Computers may use Windows XP (service pack 3), 7 or Vista or Mac OS. You will also need access to the internet to complete some homework assignments.
