Payroll Compliance Practitioner - Canadian Payroll Association

The Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) offers the only payroll certifications in Canada, and you can earn one or all of the Association’s certifications at Sheridan. Our programs will prepare you to manage compliance requirements, deliver reliable payroll information and contribute valuable insights. Certifications include:

Prerequisite Information

Students MUST have the prerequisites before enrolling in each course and may not take more than one (1) payroll course at the same time.

Important Program Note(s)

  • The CPA requires a minimum grade of 65% on both the final examination and 65% on the course to pass.
  • When on-campus, students must bring a laptop for the mid-term / final exams for some courses.

Registration Deadlines

After registering with Sheridan College, students are responsible to register with the Canadian Payroll Association and pay the required fees in order to receive the required program materials directly from the Association and be confirmed to write their examinations. Students are recommended to register ten (10) days before the course starts to make sure they receive everything on time. Canadian Payroll Association registration can take approximately 3 business days to process.Visit the Canadian Payroll Association website to register.

Program Delivery

This program is delivered via online (asynchronous) and virtual (synchronous) delivery.

In response to the current COVID-19 situation, courses BUSM79008 Payroll Compliance Legislation, BUSM79009 Payroll Fundamentals 1, and BUSM79010 Payroll Fundamentals 2 will be delivered online using a Virtual Classroom platform each week during the course’s scheduled week day and time. This approach will allow for real-time, synchronous learning in much the same manner as students experience in the classroom.  Details regarding the specific Virtual Classroom platform to be used, will be provided closer to the course start date.

Program Description

The Canadian Payroll Association’s (CPA) Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Certification is the foundation for a successful career in payroll.  Certification will help you gain an in-depth understanding of the legislative requirements to keep your organization compliant throughout the annual payroll cycle. When you get certified, you join a growing community of supportive professionals and gain access to the resources you need to stay current and compliant. 

PCP certification requires three core payroll courses, an Introduction to Accounting course transfer credit and one year of weighted, related work experience.

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Process the accounting cycle for a business 
  • Prepare and balance worksheets accordingly 
  • Understand payroll-related legistation affecting organizations
  • Utilize tools to find information and apply to different scenarios related to pay 
  • Calculate individual pay and non-individual pay

Canadian Payroll Assocation (CPA) Registration

Students must first register with Sheridan Continuing & Professional Studies and pay their course registration fee. Then, they must also register with the Canadian Payroll Association and pay the Association's applicable fee(s) of $340+ tax for current members or $439+ tax for new members in order to successfully receive the course materials and get access to the online learning platform. Students should register with the Association no later then five (5) days before the start date of their course.

Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Requirements

Please see the requirements for this certificate in completion order listed below.

  1. Payroll Compliance Legislation (PCL)
  2. Payroll Fundamentals 1 (PF1) – Prerequisite: Payroll Compliance Legislation
  3. Payroll Fundamentals 2 (PF2) – Prerequisites: Payroll Compliance Legislation and Payroll Fundamentals 1
  4. Introduction to Accounting (transfer of credit; offered at post-secondary institutions)
  5. PCP Work Experience Requirement Application (WERA) (a minimum of one year work experience in payroll)

Grade Requirements

All courses, including Introduction to Accounting, require a passing grade of 65% in order to be accepted toward PCP certification. 

Laptop & System Requirements

When classes are held on-campus, Sheridan now requires students to bring a laptop the mid-term and final exams for some courses in the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Program.

Please note that the course BUSM70951 Payroll Technology Practicum - ADP Workforce Now is a closed enrolment course. Please note that only students who have been confirmed to participate in this course will be able to register.
