Home Inspection Training Program (CHITP) Information

With Sheridan's Home Inspection Training Recognition of Achievement, you will learn the skills needed to expertly examine and provide home inspection reports. Help homeowners make informed decisions with your expert opinion. 

Program Delivery

This is a part-time program. Classes are delivered via online (asynchronous) format. 

Program Description

Sheridan’s Home Inspection Training program, in partnership with CarsonDunlop and Associates, incorporates and complies with the Standards of Practice of ASHI/CAHPI (American Society of Home Inspectors / Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors).  It also conforms to the Professional Home / Property Inspector Occupational Standards developed by the Canadian Home Inspectors and Building Officials Steering Committee for National Standards (CHIBO).

Real estate is booming - and with house sales comes home inspections. Be on the forefront of that industry by providing quality home inspections. Students will be able to develop the hands-on skills required to complete home inspections in relation to heating, plumbing, roofing, structure, electrical, air conditioning and more. Students will also receive training on communication best practices, with experience given in both verbal and written communication. 

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Describe the inspection process
  • Communicate inspection findings to the client 
  • Comply with the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics of the profession
  • Determine the status of air conditioning and heat pump functionality in residential dwellings
  • Inspect an electrical system in a residential dwelling 
  • Apply processes and procedures for interior and insulation inspections 
  • Understand the structural components of a dwelling, including type, material, condition, safety,
  • and more!

Upon graduation, students will be qualified to perform home inspections.

Materials & Textbook Requirements

Course materials are not included in the course fee for Home Inspection courses. Students must purchase the digital content required for each course directly through Carson Dunlop Associates using this link: https://store.carsondunlop.com/schools/sheridan-college

Grade Requirements 

To earn your Recognition of Achievement, you must pass all listed courses with a minimum grade of 50%. A minimum grade of 70% in all courses is required by the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI) for the Registered Home Inspector (RHI) designation.

Ontario Association of Home Inspections (OAHI)

Upon successful completion of the Home Inspection Training Program, students can visit the Ontario Association of Home Inspections (OAHI) site for information on membership and other training opportunities offered through the Association.

In addition to your Recognition of Achievement and upon completion, you can request a Certificate from CarsonDunlop Associates, call 1-866-586-6855.
