What are Micro-Credentials?
Micro-Credentials certify an individual’s achievements in specific skill sets and differ from traditional credentials, such as degrees or diplomas. They are shorter, personalized, and enables employment in specific roles. At the end of this program, you will receive an official document credential from Sheridan Continuing & Professional Studies.
Program Description
The National Payroll Institute's (NPI) (formally known as the Canadian Payroll Association/CPA) Payroll Compliance Practitioner Certification (PCP) is the foundation for a successful career in payroll. Certification will help you gain an in-depth understanding of the legislative requirements to keep your organization compliant throughout the annual payroll cycle. When you get certified, you join a growing community of supportive professionals and gain access to the resources you need to stay current and compliant.
PCP certification requires three core payroll courses, an Introduction to Accounting course transfer credit and one year of weighted, related work experience.
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Process the accounting cycle for a business
- Prepare and balance worksheets accordingly
- Understand payroll-related legislation affecting organizations
- Utilize tools to find information and apply to different scenarios related to pay
- Calculate individual pay and non-individual pay

Upon completion of the program course requirements, students will be awarded Sheridan's Payroll Specialist Micro-Credential.
Please note the four (4) compulsory courses in the Payroll Specialist Micro-Credential program are the required courses for earning the PCP certification from the National Payroll Institute. Students must successfully complete all four (4) courses with minimum grade average of 65% on both the final exam and each course. Students must also complete one (1) year related work experience in order to be eligible for the PCP Certification.
Students must then reach out to the NPI for next steps regarding obtaining the PCP certification.

Your Path to Becoming a Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP)
The National Payroll Institute's PCP designation is the foundation for a successful career in payroll. The PCP courses will help you understand the legislative requirements to keep your organization compliant throughout the annual payroll cycle. When you achieve the designation, you join a growing community of supportive professionals and gain access to the resources you need to stay current and compliant. The PCP designation requires three core payroll courses, an Introduction to Accounting course transfer credit, and one year of weighted payroll work experience. Please see "PCP Requirements section" below.
Students must first register with Sheridan College and pay the registration fee. Students must also register with the National Payroll Institute and pay the Institute's course fee and membership fee to receive access to the online materials and the learning platform. The fee is $350 for the course and $110.00 for membership plus taxes. Students should register with the Institute no later than five (5) business days before the start date of the course.
Once you have registered with CAPS for your respective course, you will receive an email with instructions on to how to register with The National Payroll Institution.
Even if not pursuing their PCP designation, they must still register with NPI to obtain materials for this course.

Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Requirements

- Payroll Compliance Legislation (PCL)
- Payroll Fundamentals 1 (PF1) – Prerequisite: Payroll Compliance Legislation
- Payroll Fundamentals 2 (PF2) – Prerequisites: Payroll Compliance Legislation and Payroll Fundamentals 1
- Introduction to Accounting (transfer of credit; offered at post-secondary institutions)
- PCP Work Experience Requirement Application (WERA) (a minimum of one year work experience in payroll)
Grade Requirements
All courses, including Introduction to Accounting, require a passing grade of 65% in order to be accepted towards the PCP certification. This requirement is set out by the institute.
Laptop & System Requirements
When classes are held on-campus, Sheridan now requires students to bring a laptop the mid-term and final exams for some courses in the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Program.
