Accounting Technician and Bookkeeping

NOTE: As of Fall 2020, this program is in the process of being phased out. Students pursuing this credential will have until the end of the Spring/Summer 2022 term to complete program requirements.

Accounting and bookkeeping spans far beyond financial institutions. Virtually every organization, from corporation to non-profit or startup, needs the expertise of accounting technicians and bookkeepers to help manage their finances.

Sheridan’s Accounting Technician and Bookkeeping certificate can open up new possibilities for people entering the field, and help finance workers who wish to advance expand their skill set and master industry best practices.

Important Note: The Accounting Technician and Bookkeeping Certificate program will be discontinued. Students pursuing this credential must complete the program requirements by the end of Spring 2022.

Research of current job postings show that employers are looking for accounting clerks, assistants and bookkeepers as key members of their finance departments. Sheridan’s Accounting Technician and Bookkeeping Certificate is designed with this need in mind.

The Certificate is for anyone who wants to secure an entry-level accounting or bookkeeping position, or for professionals with some experience who want to grow their knowledge base to advance in the field.

Courses are taught by industry professionals and practical topics including cost analysis and control, payroll and working with industry-standard accounting software. Students will also learn to maintain financial records and complete income taxes for both individuals and corporations according to the rules of the Canadian Income Tax Act.

Note: Most of the courses within this program are approved by the Society of Professional Accountants of Canada (SPAC), and can exempt those who take them from similar courses in the SPAC curriculum for their Registered Professional Accountant (RPA) designation. Courses can be taken online or in-person, on a full-time or part-time basis, providing students with flexibility to fit any busy lifestyle.

After finishing the courses in the Accounting Technician and Bookkeeping program, students can receive a Sheridan College Certificate while working on a pathway to their RPA designation.  Students are encouraged to visit the RPA website for detailed information regarding the RPA program.

Students can take the courses in any order, as long as they meet the pre-requisites. We recommend the following path:
