Certified Payroll Manager - National Payroll Institute

The National Payroll Institute (NPI) formally known as the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) offers the only payroll certifications in Canada, and you can earn one or all of the Institute’s certifications at Sheridan. Our programs will prepare you to manage compliance requirements, deliver reliable payroll information and contribute valuable insights. Certifications include: The Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Certification which will give you a solid foundation in payroll. The Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) Certification which takes your PCP knowledge to the next by teaching you how to manage a payroll department. Note:

  • A minimum grade of 65% in each course is required in order for the National Payroll Institute to accept the courses.
  • A minimum final exam grade of 65% in each Canadian Payroll Institute course (BUSM79011 and BUSM79012) is required in order for the Institute to accept the courses.

Registration Deadlines:  After registering with Sheridan College, students are responsible to register with the National Payroll Institute and pay the required fees in order to receive the required program materials directly from the Institute and be confirmed to write their examinations. Students are recommended to register 10 days before the course starts to make sure they receive everything on time. National Payroll Institute registration can take approximately 3 business days to process. Visit http://www.payroll.ca/ to register with the National Payroll Institute.

Note: In response to the current COVID-19 situation, BUSM79011 and BUSM79012 will be delivered online using a Virtual Classroom platform each week during the course’s scheduled week day and time. This approach will allow for real-time, synchronous learning in much the same manner as students experience in the classroom.  Details regarding the specific Virtual Classroom platform to be used, will be provided closer to the course start date.

The National Payroll Institute's CPM certification is the next step for The Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification holders looking to enter a management position. CPM certification builds on compliance knowledge and develops payroll management skills to prepare seasoned professionals to manage a payroll department.

Enrolment Prerequisites: Students must submit the Payroll Experience Prerequisite Application and receive approval from the Institute prior to enrolling in the Introduction to Payroll Management course. Students must also be a Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification holder.

Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) certification requires two core payroll courses and three transfer credit courses:

  1. Introduction to Payroll Management - Prerequisites: Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification and two years of weighted payroll experience)
  2. Applied Payroll Management - Prerequisite: Introduction to Payroll Management
  3. Organizational Behaviour Management - must be completed at a post-secondary institution
  4. Managerial Accounting - must be completed at a post-secondary institution
  5. Compensation & Benefits Management - must be completed at a post-secondary institution

Students must first register with Sheridan College and pay the college registration fee. Students must also register with the National Payroll Institute and pay the Institute’s applicable fee(s) in order to receive their course materials and get access to the online learning platform. Students should register with the Institute no later than five business days before the start date of the course.
